The Officer/NCO certification program provides a structured yet user friendly program whereby participants can enhance their level of knowledge and performance, while achieving their advancement goals within the organization.
The benefit of this system to the individual is that, through knowledge and ability, they may achieve their promotional expectations. Instead of being in a situation where advancement is only a distant possibility; the participants advancement depends on their desire! Each certified person will serve in their highest rank attained at various times throughout the reenactment season. Then, next event...back to a private soldier. This "grounding" concept helps build teamwork and esprit de corps.
The benefit to the 138th organization is that we develop a knowledgeable cadre of reenactors to better advance the memory of the heroes we emulate and that we obtain a motivated membership whereby future leadership positions are filled with the most knowledgeable and dedicated participants.
The benefit to the hobby, as a whole, is that these same knowledgeable reenactors will be better equiped to assume Brigade or other higher level positions in the future. Additionally, the public service that a knowledgeable reenactor can provide is a true enhancement to Civil War educational efforts.
Below you will see the certification criteria for each attainable rank. All tests for rank will be conducted in November of each year. This gives participants one calender year to prepare. The overall test for each rank will be comprised of a twenty five question written test and a rank specific performance test. Participants will be provided the opportunity for on field training throughout the season. Existing certified Officers/NCO's are required to provide educational assistance at every opportunity.
